Description

With an outpouring of oratorical and pictorial tributes, Americans reacted to the death of George Washington on December 14, 1799. This engraving by John James Barralet, dubbed The Apotheosis of Washington in the press and seen by subscribers about December 19th, was one of the more intricate mourning prints. Barralet represented Washington rising from his grave, aided by Father Time and Immortality, using classical, Christian, military, and federal symbolism. An eagle, an allegorical figure of America with her freedom hat, and a sorrowful Native American are mourning at his feet, next to the military symbols of helmet, shield, and armor. In the background, the figures of Faith, Hope and Charity grieve.
