Description

Of all Lincoln pictures, this familiar image of Abraham Lincoln, a version of which appears on the copper penny, is easily the most iconic. William Willard based this portrait on a photograph taken on February 9, 1864, by Anthony Berger at the studio of Mathew Brady in Washington, D.C. The sitting took place three weeks before the appointment of General Ulysses S. Grant as commander of all Union armies by Lincoln. On the one-hundredth anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, the Lincoln penny was first minted in 1909.
