Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He was born on December 29, 1808, and died on July 31, 1875. He was vice president at the time of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, so he assumed the presidency. Johnson was a Democrat who stood on the National Union ticket with Lincoln and was elected just as the Civil War ended. He called for the rapid reunification of the seceded states with no protection for former slaves. This caused him to struggle with the Republican-controlled Congress, resulting in his impeachment in 1868 by the House of Representatives. In the Senate, he was acquitted by a single vote.
