Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore (January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874) was the thirteenth president of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853 and was the last Whig president. Fillmore, a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Upstate New York, was elected as the 12th Vice President of the United States in 1848, and after the death of President Zachary Taylor in July 1850, he was appointed to the presidency. Fillmore was a central figure in the Compromise of 1850, a settlement that brought a temporary end to the controversy about the extension of slavery. He failed to secure the Whig presidential nomination in 1852, but four years later won the patronage of the nativist Know Nothing Party and finished third in the 1856 presidential election.
