Rutherford B. Hayes
Rutherford Birchard Hayes (October 4, 1822 – January 17, 1893) was an American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives and as governor of Ohio until becoming the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881. He had represented refugee slaves in legal trials during the antebellum years as a lawyer and staunch abolitionist. He signed the political agreement that brought the federal government’s funding for Reconstruction to an end.
