This print reproduces David Valdez’s White House photograph of George H. W. Bush, made on February 15, 1989. Valdez was chief official White House photographer throughout the Bush presidency. The Library of Congress catalogs the portrait (LC-USZ62-98302). Bush had taken the oath on January 20. This is the early camera likeness issued for government use, a color head-and-shoulders.
The White House Collection oil listed by the White House Historical Association is Herbert E. Abrams’s 1994 canvas, painted after Bush left office. That Abrams is not this listing. Valdez’s 1989 photograph belongs to the Photo Office and NARA. Do not treat the camera portrait as the later mansion oil.
