Description
This print reproduces Ralph Eleaser Whiteside Earl’s oil portrait of Andrew Jackson, the White House Collection picture cataloged by the White House Historical Association as painted about 1835. Earl, sometimes called the king’s painter at the Hermitage, lived near Jackson and painted him many times from life.
Jackson sits or stands as a civilian in a dark coat, the face lean, the hair brushed high. Earl painted him during the presidency and in retirement. The White House canvas is a half-length of about 30 by 25 inches, not Thomas Sully’s 1845 study, which is sold separately here. Earl died in 1838, a year after Jackson left office, and was buried at the Hermitage.
