Description
This print reproduces David Edwin’s stipple engraving of Thomas Jefferson after Rembrandt Peale. The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogs a second-state impression as after 1800 (32.56.6). The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts dates a related plate 1800. The shop file uses 1801, the inaugural year. Peale had painted Jefferson from life in 1800. Edwin, a Philadelphia stipple engraver, translated that head into a print for the new administration.
This bust engraving is not Cornelius Tiebout’s 1801 full-length stipple after Peale, sold separately here, in which Jefferson stands with the Declaration. It is also not Peale’s 1800 White House Collection oil itself. Edwin’s plate belongs to the Philadelphia print trade that sold the new president’s face as soon as he took office.
