Description
This print reproduces Daniel Huntington’s 1885 oil on canvas of Chester Alan Arthur, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Huntington painted a full-length state picture, about 95 by 59 inches.
Arthur had become president in 1881 after James A. Garfield’s assassination. He sat for Huntington near the end of his term. The canvas shows Arthur as a civilian in the grand manner, not in the uniformed likeness Ole Peter Hansen Balling also painted. Balling’s Arthur is sold separately here. Huntington, a New York painter of the National Academy, gave the White House a standing portrait in the older Healy scale.
