Description
This print reproduces Thomas Sully’s 1845 oil on canvas of Andrew Jackson. The National Gallery of Art holds the picture (1942.8.34). Jackson is shown as an old man, gaunt, white hair swept up, in a dark coat. The lower canvas is thinly painted, a study more than a finished state portrait.
Sully first painted Jackson from life in 1824, when the general was a senator and a presidential candidate. That 1824 study is at the National Portrait Gallery. In 1845, as Jackson’s health failed, Sully used it to paint this replica, completed shortly before Jackson died at the Hermitage on June 8. He then used the replica toward a full-length of Jackson as the hero of New Orleans. Do not confuse this head with Ralph E. W. Earl’s White House Collection portrait.
