Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1887 oil on canvas of Abraham Lincoln, a later replica of the seated pose first isolated from The Peacemakers. The National Portrait Gallery catalogs this canvas as NPG.65.50. Lincoln leans forward, chin in hand, in a dark coat and bow tie.
Healy painted the prime seated version in Paris in 1869. That picture, once owned by Robert Todd Lincoln, is the White House Collection portrait and is sold separately here. In 1887 Healy painted this replica for his patron Elihu B. Washburne. It later passed through the A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust to the National Gallery of Art, then to the National Portrait Gallery in 1965. The two pictures share a pose and should not be treated as the same object.
