Description
This print reproduces Nicolas Eustache Maurin’s 1828 lithograph of George Washington, from the series The American Kings. John Doggett of Boston commissioned lithographs after Gilbert Stuart’s set of the first five presidents. Pendleton of Boston printed the stones. The National Portrait Gallery holds the Washington sheet. Three of Doggett’s Stuart oils, Washington, Adams, and Jefferson, burned in the 1851 Library of Congress fire. The lithographs are the record of those lost canvases.
Maurin’s Washington is a bust after Stuart, not the Lansdowne full-length and not the Clark Art Athenaeum-type replica sold separately here. The companion Adams lithograph in the same 1828 series is also sold in this shop. The American Kings nickname attached to the popular prints after Stuart’s five-president set.
