Description
This print reproduces H. Houston’s stipple engraving of John Adams as president. The shop file dates the plate 1797, the inaugural year. Other collections, including the Portsmouth Athenaeum, date impressions about 1798 to 1799. Adams sits before a column and drape, a book in his lap. The dedication addresses lovers of their country and firm supporters of its Constitution. An eagle and E Pluribus Unum appear in the lettering.
Henry H. Houston was a Philadelphia engraver active in the late 1790s. This seated presidential print is not Trumbull’s White House Collection oil and not Graham’s full-length mezzotint with the Constitution sheet, both sold separately here. The Houston plate belongs to the first wave of engraved Adams portraits issued as he took office.
