Description
This print reproduces Frank O. Salisbury’s portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed 1935. Salisbury, a British painter, worked from sittings with Roosevelt in the Oval Office. The White House Historical Association dates those sittings to 1934 and notes that Salisbury had trouble getting time with the president. The first canvas was made for the Genealogical Society of New York.
Roosevelt sits at a desk with a bound volume before him, looking aside rather than at the viewer. Salisbury later painted a 1947 version that entered the White House collection as a gift of Myron C. Taylor. The image sold here follows the 1935 signed portrait. It is not the White House oil.
