Description
This print reproduces Ole Peter Hansen Balling’s oil portrait of Chester A. Arthur. Balling (1823 to 1906), a Norwegian-born painter who served in the Union Army, painted several American public men after the Civil War, including Grant and Garfield.
The National Portrait Gallery holds a Balling Arthur. The picture is not Daniel Huntington’s 1885 full-length in the White House Collection, which is sold separately here. Balling’s type is a painted bust or half-length of Arthur in civilian clothes, a studio portrait rather than Huntington’s standing state picture.
Balling, a Norwegian-born painter of Grant and other Union figures, made this separate Arthur type. It is not Huntington 1885.
This listing is a contemporary print after the painting, not the original oil. Choose fine art paper, luster photo paper, or mounted canvas.
