This print reproduces Alvin Langdon Coburn’s close photographic portrait of Theodore Roosevelt, made on April 1, 1907, in Washington. Coburn (1882 to 1966) was a leading Pictorialist. He photographed Roosevelt as a modern subject, a tight head rather than a full-length state picture.
The National Portrait Gallery and other collections hold Coburn portraits of public men. This sitting falls in Roosevelt’s second term, the year of the Inland Waterways Commission and of continued work on the Panama Canal. It is a photograph, not Sargent’s 1903 oil. The shop file names the 1907 Washington sitting.
