This print reproduces a photograph of Abraham Lincoln taken by Henry F. Warren of Waltham, Massachusetts, on March 6, 1865. Library of Congress impressions from the sitting carry the printed line that this was the latest photograph of the president, taken on the balcony at the White House.
Warren made three plates that afternoon on the south portico: one standing (now lost) and two seated. Lincoln carried a chair outside for the sitting. His hair is ruffled by the wind. For years Gardner plates were misdated to April 1865 and treated as last images. Lincoln’s secretaries John Hay and John Nicolay, writing in 1894, pointed instead to Warren’s White House balcony sitting. Gardner’s late studio work is now dated February 5, 1865. Warren’s March plates remain among the last photographs of Lincoln alive.
