Description
This print reproduces Jacques Reich’s 1902 etching of Thomas Jefferson. Reich, working in New York, etched presidents and writers from the 1890s into the 1920s. A 1902 Jefferson plate is a later graphic after painted and engraved types, not a life sitting. Jefferson had died in 1826. New-York Historical Society holds Reich portrait material that includes presidential heads.
This etching is not Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 White House Collection oil and not Mather Brown’s 1786 London canvas. Reich’s related ink drawing of Jefferson, dated 1899 to 1920 in the shop file, is sold separately here. The 1902 plate is the published etching from that campaign of American heads.
