Description
This print reproduces John Christen Johansen’s oil study of Woodrow Wilson, about 1919, at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG.65.84). Johansen, a Danish-born Chicago painter, went to Paris in June 1919 to record the Treaty of Versailles. He made individual studies for a large group of the signers. This canvas is one of those studies, a life likeness painted months before Wilson’s October 1919 stroke.
The White House Collection portrait listed by the White House Historical Association is Frank Graham Cootes’s 1936 oil, a later commemorative picture sold separately here. Johansen’s 1919 study is not that White House canvas. It shows Wilson as the peace-conference president, still in office, before the League fight broke his health.
