Description
This print reproduces Eliphalet Frazer Andrews’s 1880 oil on canvas of Andrew Johnson, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Andrews painted Johnson after the seventeenth president was dead. Johnson died in 1875. The canvas is a bust-length in a dark coat against a plain ground.
Andrews (1835 to 1915) worked in Washington and painted several official-scale portraits for public buildings, including later White House commissions. Johnson had no life portrait in the mansion comparable to Healy’s series for earlier presidents. This 1880 canvas filled that gap. A separate 1866 likeness by Washington Bogart Cooper, painted while Johnson was in office, is sold separately here.
