Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1869 oil on canvas of Abraham Lincoln, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Lincoln sits forward in a red chair, elbow on his knee, chin in his hand. Healy took the pose from his 1868 group picture The Peacemakers.
Lincoln sat for Healy in August 1864. After the assassination Healy painted the four-man River Queen scene, then isolated Lincoln in this canvas, finished in Paris in 1869. Congress had authorized a White House Lincoln that year. President Grant chose William Cogswell’s more formal picture instead. Robert Todd Lincoln bought Healy’s canvas and called it the best likeness of his father. It entered the White House Collection after 1938 and hangs in the State Dining Room.
