Description
This print reproduces Joseph E. Burgess’s 1956 oil portrait of Calvin Coolidge. Burgess painted the thirtieth president long after Coolidge’s death in 1933. The National Portrait Gallery holds the canvas (NPG.65.13).
Coolidge appears in a dark suit against a plain ground, a mid-century commemorative likeness rather than a sitting from the 1920s. The White House Collection portrait is Charles S. Hopkinson’s 1932 oil, cataloged by the White House Historical Association and sold separately here. Do not treat Burgess as that White House canvas. Hopkinson painted from life while Coolidge was still a public figure.
Burgess painted Coolidge long after 1929. The canvas is a mid-century commemorative likeness, not a White House sitting from the 1920s.
