Description
This print reproduces Theodore C. Steele’s 1900 oil portrait of Benjamin Harrison. Steele (1847 to 1926) was the leading Impressionist painter of the Hoosier School. He painted the former president in Indiana, Harrison’s home state, seven years after the White House years.
The National Portrait Gallery holds a Steele Harrison. The picture is a painted likeness from retirement, not Eastman Johnson’s 1895 White House Collection portrait, which is sold separately here. Harrison had lost the 1892 election to Grover Cleveland and returned to Indianapolis. Steele’s canvas records that later face.
Steele painted Harrison as an Indiana sitter, not as a White House commission. The canvas belongs to that later Indiana type.
