Description
This print reproduces Charles Willson Peale’s 1780 mezzotint of George Washington. The lettering on historic impressions reads His Excellency George Washington Esquire Commander in Chief of the Federal Army, inscribed to Congress, with Peale named as painter and maker. Peale both painted the source image and scraped the plate.
Washington stands three-quarter length in Continental uniform, right hand on a cannon, a flag behind him. Peale had fought at Trenton and Princeton and in 1779 painted the full-length now at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He issued this mezzotint the next year so the likeness could travel. It is a print after his painted type, not a later Stuart civic portrait.
