Description
This print reproduces George Henry Story’s oil portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Story (1835 to 1923) was a Connecticut-born painter who later served as curator of paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He did not paint Lincoln from life. He worked from photographs after the president’s death, as many artists did.
The White House Collection includes a Story Lincoln dated about 1915 among its additional portraits. Story’s type shows Lincoln in a dark coat and bow tie, the head turned slightly, a quiet studio likeness rather than a battlefield or cabinet scene. Do not confuse it with Healy’s seated 1869 White House canvas or with Gardner’s 1863 photograph, both sold separately in this shop.
