Description
This print reproduces Albert Newsam’s 1846 lithograph of Thomas Jefferson, published in Philadelphia by C. S. Williams and printed by P. S. Duval. The sheet is from Portraits of the Presidents, a matching set of oval busts. Newsam drew the stones after well-known painted types. Hand coloring turned the black-and-white lithograph into a parlor picture.
This is not Rembrandt Peale’s 1800 White House Collection oil and not Mather Brown’s 1786 London canvas, both sold separately here. Jefferson had died on July 4, 1826. Newsam’s 1846 stone is a mid-century popular print. Companion presidents in the same Williams series are listed beside it in this shop.
