Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1868 oil on canvas The Peacemakers. The scene is the after cabin of the Union steamer River Queen at City Point, Virginia. From left sit Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, President Abraham Lincoln, and Rear Adm. David D. Porter.
They met on March 27 and 28, 1865, less than a week before Petersburg fell. Grant had asked Lincoln to come down to headquarters. Sherman arrived that same week, and Porter, who commanded the fleet on the James, joined them. They talked through how the war might end. Healy painted the group three years later, after Lincoln was dead, as a historical picture rather than a life sitting of all four men together. Lincoln leans forward, chin in hand. Through the windows behind him a rainbow marks the hope of peace, a detail recorded by the White House Historical Association.
