Description
This print reproduces Cornelius Tiebout’s stipple engraving of Thomas Jefferson as president, published in Philadelphia by Augustus Day about 1801. The Library of Congress catalogs the sheet (96522974). Jefferson stands beside a table, lifting the Declaration of Independence. A bust of Franklin and books rest on the table. A globe is at his feet. The plate is after Rembrandt Peale. Publisher Mathew Carey had earlier paid Peale for the right to copy the 1800 life portrait.
This full-length print is not David Edwin’s bust stipple after the same Peale, sold separately here. It is not the White House Collection oil itself. Tiebout (1777 to 1832) was a leading Philadelphia engraver. The 1801 Day publication sold the new president as a statesman of the Declaration, a large stipple for the parlor.
