Description
This print reproduces William Cogswell’s oil portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Cogswell (1819 to 1903) painted a standing, formal likeness after the president’s death. In 1869 Congress authorized a Lincoln for the Executive Mansion. George P. A. Healy sent his seated 1869 canvas from Paris. President Grant chose Cogswell’s picture instead.
The White House Collection still holds a Cogswell Lincoln dated 1869 among its additional portraits. Healy’s seated version, later owned by Robert Todd Lincoln, entered the White House only in the twentieth century and hangs in the State Dining Room. That Healy is sold separately here. Cogswell’s type presents Lincoln upright in a dark coat, a state portrait rather than the contemplative pose Healy took from The Peacemakers.
