Description

This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1853 oil on canvas of Franklin Pierce, a seated half-length painted the year Pierce took office. Healy was among the most active American portrait painters of the mid-nineteenth century and returned to Pierce later. The standing canvas he finished in Chicago on May 15, 1858, is the White House collection portrait. That later picture is sold separately in this shop.

The 1853 likeness is the seated type cataloged by the National Portrait Gallery as NPG.65.49. Do not confuse the two. The 1853 picture shows Pierce in a dark coat, white standing collar, and cravat, with a red chair back at the right.

This listing is a contemporary print after the 1853 oil, not the museum painting and not the 1858 White House canvas. Available on fine art paper, luster photo paper, or mounted canvas.
