This print reproduces Charles S. Hopkinson’s 1932 oil on canvas of Calvin Coolidge, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Hopkinson painted Coolidge three years after the presidency ended.
Coolidge sits in a dark suit, a New England face in a formal interior. Hopkinson (1869 to 1962) was a Boston portraitist. The White House canvas measures about 55 by 50 inches. A later 1956 oil by Joseph E. Burgess, held by the National Portrait Gallery, is sold separately here and is not the White House picture.
The canvas is about 55 by 50 inches. Hopkinson recorded Coolidge as the reserved New England president, years after the 1920s boom and the 1929 crash.
