Description
This print reproduces John James Barralet’s memorial engraving of George Washington, often titled Apotheosis of Washington or Commemoration of Washington. The Metropolitan Museum dates the design 1800 to 1802. Barralet, an Irish-born artist in Philadelphia, drew Washington rising from the tomb with Father Time and Immortality. Faith, Hope, and Charity grieve. An eagle, Liberty with a pileus, and a mourning Native American sit with discarded armor.
The head follows Gilbert Stuart. Barralet prepared the image for what would have been Washington’s seventieth birthday in 1802. The shop file uses 1816, a date that matches later restrikes and Barralet’s death about 1815. National Portrait Gallery sheets are cataloged as about 1800 to 1816. Both the 1802 design date and the 1816 file date are supported.
