Description
This print reproduces Valentine Green’s mezzotint General Washington, engraved in London after John Trumbull. The Metropolitan Museum catalogs a first state published January 15, 1781 (24.90.26). The shop file dates this listing 1783, likely a later state or issue of the same plate. Trumbull’s source oil of 1780, also at the Met, shows Washington on the Hudson with William Lee.
Green was the leading British mezzotinter of his day. His plate carried Trumbull’s likeness, the first authoritative Washington widely available in Europe, into print shops. The full composition includes Lee in a turban holding the horse. Some later trims crop to the head. Do not confuse this plate with the cannon-and-horse listing PP1027. The painted source is Trumbull 1780. The engraving is Green.
