Description
This print reproduces Robert Edge Pine’s 1785 oil on canvas of George Washington, National Portrait Gallery NPG.80.16. Pine, an English painter sympathetic to the American cause, spent three weeks at Mount Vernon in April and May 1785. Washington posed in his Continental Army uniform two years after resigning his commission. The canvas is a half-length life portrait.
After the visit Washington wrote that he was so hackneyed to the painter’s pencil that he sat like patience on a Monument. Francis Hopkinson had recommended Pine as a man who wanted real portraits, not ideal pictures. This 1785 Mount Vernon sitting is not Gilbert Stuart’s later Athenaeum type and not Charles Willson Peale’s wartime canvases. It is Pine’s life record of the retired commander.
