Description
This print reproduces Washington Bogart Cooper’s 1866 oil portrait of Andrew Johnson. Cooper (1802 to 1888), a Tennessee painter, worked from life while Johnson held the presidency after Lincoln’s assassination. The date places the sitting in the year of the midterm elections and of Johnson’s growing fight with the Republican Congress.
Cooper had painted Tennessee sitters for decades and knew Johnson’s world. The picture is a painted likeness from the presidency, not the later White House Collection canvas by Eliphalet Frazer Andrews, finished in 1880 after Johnson’s death. That Andrews portrait is sold separately here. Cooper’s type shows Johnson in a dark coat, the face of a sitting president rather than a commemorative bust.
