Description
This print reproduces William Clarke’s 1800 equestrian portrait of George Washington. Washington died on December 14, 1799. The next year brought funeral orations, songs, and pictures. Clarke’s horseback image belongs to that mourning market. It treats Washington as both general and president.
Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1814 that Washington was the greatest horseman of his age and the most graceful figure that could be seen on horseback. Clarke’s print uses that reputation. It is not a life sitting. Washington was dead. The National Portrait Gallery and other collections hold early equestrian memorial prints of this type. The date 1800 is the publication year in the shop file.
