This print reproduces Gilbert Stuart’s oil of George Washington at the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, accession 1955.16. The Clark dates the canvas 1796 to 1803. It is one of Stuart’s many replicas after the unfinished Athenaeum life portrait of 1796, now shared by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery. Wikipedia and the shop file use 1803. The Clark’s own label uses the span 1796 to 1803.
Washington appears in the black velvet Athenaeum pose, the head that later served the dollar bill. This is not the White House Collection Lansdowne-type Stuart of 1797, and it is not Rembrandt Peale’s 1795 life sitting sold separately here. The Clark replica is a finished studio variant of the Athenaeum type, painted in Stuart’s later New England years.
