Description
This print reproduces Thomas Cheesman’s 1796 engraving after John Trumbull’s painting of George Washington at Trenton. Trumbull took a sitting in Philadelphia in 1792. He considered the resulting full-length, now at the Yale University Art Gallery, among his best pictures of Washington. Charleston had commissioned a civic portrait and then refused this warlike image.
When Trumbull went to London with John Jay in 1794 he brought a copy. Publisher Antonio Cesare de Poggi issued Cheesman’s large plate in 1796. The password in Washington’s army before Trenton was Victory or Death. The print shows the general on the eve of the crossing, not in the boats. It is an engraving after Trumbull, not a life portrait by Cheesman.
