James Buchanan Presidential Portrait

Price range: $14.00 through $131.90

George P. A. Healy’s oil of James Buchanan, a painted likeness distinct from the White House ivory miniature.

SKU: PP1045 Categories: ,

Description

This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s oil portrait of James Buchanan. Healy painted Buchanan around 1859, during the presidency. Congress had commissioned Healy in 1857 to paint living presidents, then declined to pay for Buchanan amid the political fight that preceded secession.

The White House Historical Association’s presidential series lists a different object as the Collection portrait of Buchanan: John Henry Brown’s 1851 watercolor on ivory, a miniature about 6 by 4 inches. This listing follows the Healy oil named in the shop file, a full-scale painted head, not Brown’s ivory. Do not treat the two as the same work.

This listing is a contemporary print after the painting, not the original oil. Choose fine art paper, luster photo paper, or mounted canvas.
