Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s oil of James K. Polk painted from life in January and February 1846. The National Portrait Gallery catalogs the canvas as NPG.2019.14, a gift from the Corcoran. Polk sits in a red chair, a bust-length in a black coat and cravat.
Polk wrote that the sitting interfered too much with his business hours. In 1846 he signed the act creating the Smithsonian Institution, which now holds this picture. Healy later used the life study for the 1858 standing White House Collection portrait, a larger grand-manner canvas sold separately here. The two dates are 1846 from life and 1858 for the mansion.
