Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1858 oil on canvas of James K. Polk, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Polk stands three-quarter length in a dark coat, a red drape and papers at the table. The canvas is about 62 by 47 inches.
Congress commissioned Healy in 1857 to paint living presidents for the Executive Mansion. Polk had died in 1849. Healy used his earlier life sitting. In January and February 1846 he had painted Polk from life in Washington. Polk complained in his diary that posing interfered with business hours. That 1846 bust, now at the National Portrait Gallery, is sold separately here.
