Description

This print reproduces Albert Newsam’s 1846 lithograph of James Madison, published in Philadelphia by C. S. Williams and printed by P. S. Duval. The Library of Congress catalogs the sheet (2010651305) from Portraits of the Presidents. Copyright was entered in 1846 in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Madison appears as an oval bust in an ornamental frame, a popular type rather than a life sitting.

This is not John Vanderlyn’s 1816 White House Collection oil, sold separately here. Madison had died in 1836. Newsam, a deaf Philadelphia lithographic draftsman, supplied Williams with a uniform set of early presidents. Hand-colored impressions were sold as household decoration. Companion stones in the same series are listed in this shop.

This listing is a contemporary reproduction of the historic print, not an original impression. Choose fine art paper, luster photo paper, or mounted canvas.
