Description
This print reproduces Chester Harding’s 1829 oil portrait of James Madison. Harding, a self-taught American painter, visited Madison in retirement at Montpelier. The date is after both presidential terms. Madison was then the last surviving signer of the Constitution among the Virginia dynasty.
The National Portrait Gallery holds a Harding Madison. The picture is a civilian bust, not John Vanderlyn’s 1816 White House Collection portrait, painted while Madison was still in office. Vanderlyn’s canvas is sold separately here. Harding’s 1829 sitting records the older Madison, the face of the convention years seen from the end of his life.
