Description
This print reproduces Samuel F. B. Morse’s oil on canvas of James Monroe, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association as about 1819. Morse, later famous for the telegraph, was then a working portrait painter. The canvas is about 30 by 25 inches.
Monroe sits in a dark coat during his first term, the years of the Monroe Doctrine still ahead (1823). Morse painted several American statesmen before he turned to invention. The White House Historical Association lists this Morse as the Collection picture of the fifth president. It is a painted sitting, not a later commemorative bust.
