Description
This print reproduces David Edwin’s engraved portrait of John Adams. Edwin (1776 to 1841), born in Bath and active in Philadelphia, was among the best American stipple engravers of the early republic. The shop file dates the plate 1800, Adams’s last full year as president and the year of his defeat by Jefferson. Edwin often worked after Gilbert Stuart and Edward Savage.
The image is a printed bust for the market, not Trumbull’s White House Collection oil and not Stuart’s National Gallery canvas sold separately here. Edwin also engraved Jefferson after Rembrandt Peale. His Adams plate belongs to that same Philadelphia print trade around 1800, when engraved heads of the president circulated as cabinet pictures.
