Description
This print reproduces Albert Newsam’s 1846 lithograph of John Adams, published in Philadelphia by C. S. Williams and printed by P. S. Duval. The Library of Congress catalogs the sheet (2009631980) from the series Portraits of the Presidents. Newsam (1809 to 1864), a deaf artist trained at the Pennsylvania Institution, drew the stone after earlier painted types. Hand coloring was offered on some impressions.
The series issued Washington through the sitting president as matching oval busts in ornamental frames. Companion stones of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, John Quincy Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, and Harrison are sold separately here. Newsam’s Adams is a mid-century popular print, not a life portrait. Adams had been dead twenty years.
