Description
This print reproduces Nicolas Eustache Maurin’s 1828 lithograph of John Adams, from the series The American Kings. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds an impression (59.534.8). John Doggett of Boston published the set. W. and J. Pendleton lithographed the stones after Gilbert Stuart’s portraits of the first five presidents. Stuart’s Doggett oils of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson burned in the 1851 Library of Congress fire. The lithographs preserve those lost heads.
The companion Washington sheet is sold here as The American Kings. Mauzaisse’s 1827 Paris lithograph of Adams, after Stuart, is a different European plate, also in this shop. Maurin’s 1828 Boston stone is the American Kings Adams, a bust in the Stuart manner, issued two years after Adams died on July 4, 1826.
