Description
This print reproduces Albert Newsam’s 1846 lithograph of John Quincy Adams, published in Philadelphia by C. S. Williams and printed by P. S. Duval. The Library of Congress catalogs the sheet (98501750). Adams, then a Massachusetts congressman after his presidency, was still living when the series appeared. He would collapse in the House in 1848.
This popular oval bust is not George P. A. Healy’s 1858 White House Collection oil, painted after Adams died, and not George Caleb Bingham’s 1850 canvas, both sold separately here. Newsam drew a matching presidential set. Hand coloring was applied to some impressions for the parlor trade.
