Description
This print reproduces George P. A. Healy’s 1858 oil on canvas of Martin Van Buren, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. The canvas is about 62 by 47 inches. Van Buren was still living when Congress commissioned Healy in 1857.
Healy painted Van Buren in the grand manner, a standing or three-quarter civilian likeness with the accessories of a state portrait. Van Buren had left office in 1841. The picture belongs to the same series as Healy’s Pierce, Tyler, Polk, Fillmore, and John Quincy Adams canvases for the mansion. The White House Historical Association lists Healy 1858 as the Collection portrait of the eighth president.
