Description
This print reproduces John Singer Sargent’s 1903 oil on canvas of Theodore Roosevelt, the White House Collection portrait cataloged by the White House Historical Association. Sargent stayed in the White House in February 1903 and finished the picture on the nineteenth. The canvas is about 58 by 40 inches.
Roosevelt stands in a dark suit, right hand on a stair newel, left hand on his hip. WHHA recounts that artist and sitter argued about posing on the stairs. Roosevelt gripped the post and told Sargent he did know how to pose. Sargent told him not to move. The White House Historical Association dates the Collection portrait 1903. Some older captions use 1902 for the commission year.
